as promised, this installment of APPLES TO APPLES includes our first apple from a farm other than devoto gardens. it also has two new devoto apples. all in all, a light week, but one with old favorites and new surprises.

Fuji

the fuji is a very popular, or at least available, apple. it is very sweet, perhaps even overly sweet, with a nice crisp texture and lots of juice. the fuji’s shortcomings are two-fold: one, as i said, it can be overly sweet; and two, its skin is not awesome. i am not sure if it’s too thick or too chewy or what it is, but it gets in the way. i have a couple more of these in the fridge, and i’m thinking i’m going to skin those before i eat them.

the verdict:

PUT A FEW OF THESE IN YOUR FACE.

Golden Delicious

wow. i took my first bite expecting to hate this apple, and i totally did not. now, i’m not saying it’s a favorite or anything. but i expected mealy and got a little crisp and on the creamy side. i expected overly sweet and got sweet, not overpoweringly intense, and even a hint of tartness at the end.

well played, golden delicious. well played.

the verdict:

PUT A FEW OF THESE IN YOUR FACE.

Wickson

ah, our first non-devoto entrant in this season’s APPLES TO APPLES sweepstakes. the wickson comes from another farm, i want to say it’s called the apple farm—they’re kind of by the gandhi statue at the saturday ferry building market. anyways, i knew this one was coming because i am a huge fan od this little apple—and i mean little. the size of a tiny plum or a large cherry, the wickson is crisp, juicy, and tart. the only problem with the wickson is that, while its smallness is cute, it means you have to eat a lot of them to get satisfied. i also think (though i’ve gathered no real data on this) that the small size means that the edible flesh makes up a smaller percentage of the apple by volume, and the core makes up a greater percentage.

on the plus side, they’re great for tiny snacks. if these were somehow seedless, they might take over the world.

the verdict:

PUT THESE IN YOUR FACE.
